Transshipment of imported goods through the seaports of Astrakhan and Olya increased by 55% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, and export – by 20%.
According to Rosmorport's operational data, in January – September of this year, the total cargo turnover of the seaports of Astrakhan and Olya amounted to almost 4 million tons, which is 27% higher than the cargo turnover for the same period in 2023.
According to the results of the third quarter, the leaders of transshipment remain JSC "Commercial Sea Port of Olya" (909.1 thousand tons), PJSC "Astrakhan Port" (693.3 thousand tons), JSC "Astrakhan Seaport" (574.1 thousand tons). It is expected that the port of Olya will reach record figures for the entire history of the port in terms of transshipment volume of 1 million tons.
The main cargo range of the Astrakhan Region port complex for the first 9 months of 2024 is grain (more than 50% of the total cargo volume, with an increase in transshipment volume by 44% compared to the same period last year). Transshipment of polypropylene and cement increased 2 times, transshipment of paper increased almost 4 times, transshipment of chemical products and fertilizers increased by 46%.
Explaining what sets the dynamics of cargo turnover in Astrakhan ports, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy of the Astrakhan region reported on the high demand for the Trans–Caspian section of the North-South MTK.
The increase in cargo traffic along the corridor is also facilitated by the implementation of measures aimed at eliminating infrastructure constraints. In 2022-2023, more than 15 million cubic meters of soil were extracted from the bottom of the Volga-Caspian Sea shipping Channel to ensure a 4.5-meter draft of ships.
